Le Rebelle


Le Rebelle has taken the place of Circa in Beaufort Street, Mt Lawley, and is housed in an extended, slender room throughout a few ranges with the heavy carved bar taking delight of place on the second degree. Sitting within the downstairs space we started with a glass of the superb new Pet Nat from Dormilona, Yokel -yeasty and cloudy, with a crisp inexperienced apple and lemon palate – simply the factor to get the style buds glowing.

Then onto crab toast – picked blue manna crab, juicy and salty, on toasted bread, served with creamy lemon mayo and a sprinkle of dill – a really spectacular and lightweight starter.

We turned to a different from the starter part of the menu and this time have been introduced with double spiced prawns – two fried prawns, cooked with their tails, complemented by slaw and a mildly spiced cocktail sauce – kind of a deconstructed prawn cocktail, however so a lot better than these of my youth!

While having fun with the meals we ordered a bottle of Italian rosé – Langhe Rosato 2018 – which we had coincidentally come throughout the earlier weekend at an Italian wine and cheese tasting on the Wine Loft in Cottesloe – made out of Nebbiolo it’s vibrant pink with a bouquet of cherries, strawberries, watermelon and violet florals; the superbly dry palate is filled with the flavours of raspberries and cranberries – an awesome drop, certainly.

Then we ordered one of many specials, and particular it was – deep fried mozzarella croquettes, crisp crackly coating, oozy and creamy cheese, and sloshed with probably the most beautiful XO sauce – all of the salty, shellfish, chilli, onion and garlic flavours combining to make a most excellent sauce – lick the plate stuff – this was an absolute spotlight.

So, all in all a really spectacular place that is – nicely ready and cooked bistro dishes, in a sometimes bistro-style setting – at occasions crowded and loud, however that’s all a part of the enjoyable. The XO sauce lingers in my reminiscence and the wine record, whereas comparatively small, is properly curated and has an fascinating choice. Definitely a spot to get again too quickly.
